Where Do Ya Get It?

This page lists many resources you may need and where to get them, including software such as FTP programs and how to set them up.

When you save or upload a picture, or save a page in the new web builder, there are some rules you MUST follow.
You should avoid anything other than letters, numbers, "_" and "-" in the name. You CANNOT USE %,$,#,&,;,:,",' etc, so avoid all except A-Z, 0-9,_ and -. Also, because the internet is case sensitive, if you save a picture as (for example) picture_1.JPG, then no-one will be able to find it if they look for picture_1.jpg.
Also - Pictures should not be too big - if the file size is greater than about 75K you should use a picture editor to reduce it's size. Too big = too slow to load.

What is FTP anyway? - It stands for File Transfer Protocol, but what it does is enable upload of pages or pictures you have on your computer to your website - any number at a time in any name.

There are great sites such as tucows available where you can get LOTS of trial or sample programs for the internet etc.
For FTP usage I personally use CUTEFTP, it is not only easy to use, but the more of us using the same program then the greater number of people who are able to help others use it.

To get a copy of the lastest version Click here

Once you have it loaded onto your computer and have started the program, click on Personal FTP sites in the left side box, then ADD SITE on the right side.
The "site label" is whatever you want to call it - the "Host Address" is usually ftp.yoursitename.com and the "userid" and "password" are your site name and password.
The only other items to change are the "Initial Local Directory", which is where you have your pics or files on your PC - use the little button beside that box to select the directory, and then finally go to the ADVANCED button at the top and select the FORCE LOWER CASE option at bottom left. Save it, select connect and you can start uploading straight away.

PICTURES???

There are 1.6 Million Digital Images available at Corbis.com - i have not checked them out myself - but feel free to check them out.

How do I get my website listed on the search engines? - Have a look at this page and see what to do.

Where does that Email come from? this page which tells which country of origin the letters at the end of the email address are. www.uninett.no/navn/domreg.html

FREE PAGE COUNTERS

How do i add a free counter onto my website - and what are counters anyway?

On the bottom of many pages is a counter (called a hit counter') that lets you know how many people have visited the site. This is useful information. Most people like to add a counter to the website they create too so they know how many (if any) people are visiting their site.
This is easy to do - there are several places you can get a free hit counter - the one i have used on the MAIN page of this website is from
www.pollit.com. The instructions are given at their site on how to add it to your site - it is EASY to do. - they also have guest book, and all sorts of other stuff for free there too.
- Talking of FREE - have a look at www.freecenter.com who havve links to dozens of FREE useful (and useless) sites that you can use!

www.spinwave.com/crunchers.html is a free jpeg and gif cruncher. I have my own software to do this, but an online contact used to use this free program quite a bit to optimize their pictures so they would down-load faster.

A great Chatter's Jargon Dictionary is available for those who want to get "into" chat-boards, but dont know what all those little abbreviations and funny code-y looking things such as :-) mean (it is a smiling face -sideways - they are called emoticons). Not my creation, but helpful if you want to know more about such things.

Registering a domain name.

When you first connect to the Internet, most service providers will issue you with an email address.
This has disadvantages: while you can send and receive electronic mail, another company's name will be part of your email address. These addresses, such as joebloggs@one.net.au, also belong to the provider. Should it go out of business so will your email address. You will also need to change it if you switch access providers. These changes are all costly and time-consuming.
To be able to create your own email addresses you need to register your business name on the Internet. This is called registering a domain name.
A sample imaginary company name is Telofia. Thier domain name would be Telofia.com.au. Their Web address www.telofia.com.au. & their email address sales@telofia.com.au.

Choosing a Domain Name
The group that provides '.com.au' addresses sets certain rules that must be met before it approves domain name applications.
Most important is that the name you request must be derived from your registered company or business name. You must supply your ACN (Australian Company Number) or your ABRN (Australian Business Registration Number) when you apply. If you operate as a sole trader, trading under your own name and do not have a registered business name you can register a domain name derived from your name.
Examples ...
Hagar Beer could request one of the following domain names providing that they are not already taken: Hagarbeer.com.au, hagar.com.au or hb.com.au. However, Hagar Beer could not register drunk.com.au or bestbeer.com.au because such common or generic words describing products (goods or services), industries or organisations cannot be registered.
For instance, Hagar Beer could not register beer.com.au because beer is a product. Other unacceptable words include banking (it is an industry) and toys. A domain can, however, be a generic phrase made up of two generic words.

A sole trader, trading under the name Mark Graham could register the domain www.mark.com.au or www.graham.com.au.

Domain Name Requirements
The domain name must be at least two characters long.
It must contain only alphanumeric characters (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and hyphens (-).
It must not start or finish with a hyphen.
It must not be an Australian place name.
The maximum number of characters in a domain name is 63. This includes full stops (.) and the suffix. Remember, the http:// and the www normally found at the front of a Web address are not considered part of the domain name.
The domain name telofia.com.au has a total length of 14 characters.
Keep your domain name short and this will help your customers remember your email and Web address.
Upper (AAZZ) and lower (aazz) cases do not affect domain names but they are sometimes a great marketing tool.

To check whether your domain name is available, access the Internet Names Australia(INA) site at www.ina.com.au.

When a domain is registered for a company, the registration body collects such information as the administrative, billing and technical contacts. For instance, details for the owners of .com, .net and .org domain names can be viewed under the 'WHOIS Lookup' section of www.networksolutions.com website.
Listings for Australian website owners can be seen under WHOIS at www.aunic.net.

On these websites you will be able to enter the URL of the domain for which you need contact details. It will list all the technical details for that particular domain, including a contact telephone number and email address. Not all domain details are available through this website because of different policies for registering domain names in different countries.

If you still can't find who you are looking for, contact your local consumer affairs department.

What domain names mean
You can normally tell which region an organisation is located in by looking at the abbreviation at the end of its Web address. For instance, .com would indicate that a company is located in the US. But there are exceptions to the rule because some countries have fewer restrictions on registering such domain names than others. Because the American system is completely open ANYONE can register its name in the .com domain. However, for many companies this may be difficult because there are already more than 8 million domains registered in the increasingly global .com namespace.
